Two prominent Rugby football players in Hamilton this season are D. Paterson, a forward, and B. Paterson, second five-eighths, who play for the Hamilton High School Old Boys’ Club. Two seasons ago they were playing for the High School first fifteen, and after one year in the .-junior grades both gained places in the senior team. He stated that Randwick and Western Suburbs, who played the best football he has seen for years, would beat any club team in New Zealand. Mr. Simpson was also impressed with the refereeing of Mr. W. S. Chapman, who controlled the matches at Sydney when the All Blacks defeated New South Wales and later Australia. Mr. Simpson had seen the official in club games previously. • • • • Astonishing End to Fight. A more astonishing ending to a fight than that of the Eddie Phillips-Ben Foord Empire heavyweight elimination bout in London recently has not been seen for many years. In the ninth round Foord lay face downward, perfectly conscious, fighting desperately to get to his feet, his right leg stretched upward behind him, paralysed. Afterward, Foord said that he thought he was struck in the groin, but whether by his opponent’s knee or by his glove he did not know. Phillips looked astonished and deeply concerned as Foord was being counted out, and ran to help him rise, but his view afterward was that he had hit Foord with a left to the so-lar plexus.
