Y.M.C.A. Harrier Club

CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY C. WELLER The Y.M.C.A. Harrier Club held their championship race from tho Y.M.C.A. on Saturday afternoon. Despite the wintry conditions, a good field faced the starter, Mr. J. Eagle. C. Weller started 1£ minutes after the remainder of tho field. N. Hearsey took the lead after the start, followed closely by J. Scott. At the end of the first lap Hearsey had opened a big gap on the remainder of the field and at this stage Weller had not gained on him. Weller overtook the whole field gradually in the second lap. He caught Hearsey with 500 yards to go, and de feated him by two yards in the fast finish. The next to finish was K. Galloway, followed by S. Oxenham, R. Lamberton and D. McCardle, C. MeVicar, J. Scott and J. Spall finishing within five yards of each other. McVicar won the sprint from Scott by one yard. H. McDonald (10) and S. McVicar (11) ran steadily throughout and were fairly close up at the finish. All the runners showed better form than last week.

C. W'eller is in great form at the moment and N. Hearsey has a good chance of obtaining a place in the West Coast team at the New Zealand championships. J. Spall is improving every week while H. McDonald after a season’s spell is gradually coming back to form. D. McCardle, the 16-year-old Feilding runner, possesses great stamina for one so young. With Galloway, Lamberton, C. McVicar and J. Scott also running consistently, the Palmerston North Club should extend Wanganui in the inter-club race at Wanganui next week.

After the run the runners were entertained at afternoon tea by members of the ladies* committee. At a suitable juncture, Mr. J. Eagle, the club president, presented C. Weller, the senior champion, with a miniature e ’ eld, and D. McCardle, the junior champion, with a cup donated by Mr. C. P. Nash. The following are the placings and times of the first eleven to finigh: C. Weller (35min. 20secs.) 1, N. Hearsey (36.50) 2, K. Galloway (38.28) 3, S.

Oxenham (38.55) 4, R. Lamberton (39.15) 5, D. McCardle (39.42) 6, C. McVicar (40.25) 7, J. Scott (40.26) 3, J. Spall (40.27) 9, H. McDonald (40.40) 10, S. McVicar (41.20) 11.
