Women’s Institutes

NIREAHA As a birthday celebration the Nireaha Women’s Institute held a fancy dress ball on Friday evening last, when the hall was filled to capacity. Visitors were present from as far away as Carterton. The early part of the evening was set aside for the young folk, the programme commencing at 6.45 p.m. Under the supervision of Mrs. Dysart and Mr. Duncan tho school children entertained with dan s, recitations, items until 9.30 p.m. The excellent performances of the pupils found favour with the large audience, which was enthusiastic in showing its appreciation. At the conclusion of the juvenile programme, little Shirley Davis presented Mrs. J. P. Petersen (president o£ tho women’s institute) with l bouquet, find Master Bruce Burr, in a very able speech, thanked all who had helped to conduct the arrangments for the evening. Mrs. Petersen, in replying, thanked all for the manner in which they had joined in the entertainment and mentioned it was a great joy to the wome’s institute committee to see the young folk have such a wonderful time. Following this the children were entertained at supper. Novelty dances on the children’s programme were won as follows: Lucky cup, Dora Pryde and Olive Davis; lucky spot, Noelene Goss and Beryl "Willows. Dancing for the adults then followed, the music being supplied by the local orchestra. Mr. R. Lawrence acted as M.C. for tho combined programmes. Streamer, confetti, bon-bon and novelty dances were included in the programme. Winners of the novelty dances we : Monte Carlo, Mrs. J. Brookes and Mr. J. R. Mason; hat dance, Mrs. S. Davis and Mr. F. Goggin; lucky spot, Miss B. Buller and Mr. E. Goss; first couple on floor, Mrs. J. R. Mason aud Mr. A. E. Holloway. Supper, a buffet one, was a most enjoyable repast, being provided by local ladies, and dancing continued until the early hours. The committee responsible for a function which was outstanding in its excellence were: Mrs. J.
