ILL-HEALTH FOR SIX YEARS From Our Own Correspondent. HASTINGS, July 26. The winner of the “My Luck's In K fire union is Mr. A. F. Adams, of Hastings street, Napier, who has suffered ill-health, and has not been able to vork for the past six years, since he was the victim of an accident while working in the freezing chambers, at Tokomaru Boy in 1932. It is only a month since Mr. Adams came out of hospital. He bought the ticket purely on the Impulse of the moment on the Thursday before the art union closed, and although he has been a ticket-holder In most art unions for the greater part of his life, this is the first occasion upon which he has won a prize. He became aware cf his good fortune about midday to-day when Mr James Brock, with whom Mr Adams is living came home from work with the news that the ticket was a winner. Mr Adams said that he does not know yet what he will do with the money, but suggests that he will almost certainly use some of it to help him back to health. This is the first occasion, so far as could be ascertained this morning, that a big art union prize has come to Napier. and tbe occupants were preparing to lift carpets, linoleums and furniture when the flood showed signs of subsiding. Bowling Greens Suffer. Gathering impetus as it raced down tho steep slopes of Grafton gully, a raging stream of storm water .tore into tho playing area of the Auckland Bowling Club and caused damage estimated at £IOO. As it swept past the residence of the caretaker the water carried away a four-foot fence, depositing it across one of tho croquet lawns. A sheet of water up to sft. deep covered the lower bowling greens and tho staff workshop was completely flooded out. •• In all iny experience of years hero I have never known a flood to rise so rapidly on the greens,” said the caretaker. “The water roared past my house in a torrent, carrying silt and shrubs, and. 1 am airaid tnere will be a considerable depth of debris to be cleared off the greens, w r hich have been in course of preparation for weeks past.” While speaking the caretaker pointed to wooueu seats floating across the bowling greens. feilt, inches aeep, was washed off the new Domain drive across Stanley street and toward {Stanley street tenuis courts. Scenes similar to those witnessed in Queen street were also presented in parts of Dominion road, where tram lines were inundated and water rose to within a foot or so of the shop-fronts. In the vicinity of V alley road the water entered a few very lowly-situated shops in which slight damage was caused in spite of the efforts oi the shopkeepers to stem the water with brooms aud mops. Where Two Streams Converged One of the worst instances of flooding occurred at the intersection of Surrey and Crummer roads, where two streams of water converged. In ait astonishingly short time tiio water banked up* to a height of about four feet, sweeping through the lower portions of an apartment house, from which the water was draining, and an hour after tho deluge had ceased. Slips on the Line Carrying six piasaengexs, a mixed train which leit Auckland lor Wliangarei at 4.5 p.rn., encountered a siip> at Makerau at about 7 p.m. aud returned to Kaukapakapia. It was intended to bring the train back to iielcusville so that the passengers could obtain accommodation, but this had not been accomplished at a late hour because cf further slips just south of Kaukapiakapa. Gangs were working at the slips and it was not expected that the fine at these places would take long to clear. Three feet of water over the lino stopped the 3.20 p.m. train from Whaugarei to Auckland at about 7 p.m., aud it was necessary to return to Websford, where four piasscngers were accommodated for the night.
