“Golden Boy” Hunt Getting Hotter

The search, for * 4 Golden Boy ’ goes cn with undiminished ardour at Columbia Studios. Hundreds of letters, photos, and postcards pour in by every mail from young men who feel they look like and could live the part of the brash, sensitive, glove-pushing, lovable hero of Clifford Odets’ play of the same Candidates are being interviewed personally at tho rate of fifty to sixty u day. The most promising in appearance and ability are retained for examination and testing. From these are selected the finalists who are handed try-out .scripts, put into make-up, and given extensive camera and voice tests.

In the special ‘' Golden Boy ’ ’ headquarters that have been set up by Columbia at 1420 North Beechwood Drive, Hollywood, a corps of stenographers is kept busy writing 200 letters a day to applicants. Julius Evans, in charge of the search, stated that he has had to enlarge his staff of assistants in order to adequately handle the large volume of correspondence.
