Fiji’s Sound Economic Position
COMMENT BY LATE GOVERNOR Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. On. transfer to Jamaica, where he is to take over the position of Governor, Sir Arthur Richards, lately Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, arrived at Auckland by the Niagara from Suva. He was accompanied by Lady Richards and their two children and also by Captain P. Jeffs (aide-e-camp). They left for Wellington and will leave for Jamaica on Thursday by the Rangitikei from Wellington and the ship will be specially diverted from her ordinary route to land him at Kingston. Sir Arthur’s successor in Fiji, Sir Harry Luje, is expected to reach Fiji on September 16. Confidence in Fiji’s economic position was expressed by Sir Arthur, who said he thoroughly enjoyed his period as Governor of the colony. Its finances, he said, were in a very sound position, great assistance coming from the goldmining industry, and its new Constitution, giving Europeans and Indians equal representation in the Legislative Council, was working well.
