From Our Own Correspondent. Golf. The stroke competition played on ladies’ day resulted in a win for Mrs G. Nicol, with a nett 37 for nine holes. The qualifying rounds have now been completed, but the championships will not commence until August 2. The following is the draw for to-day (Tuesday): Miss J. Fergusson and Mrs N. Anderson; Miss M. Anderson and Miss O Fergusson; Mrs Nicol and Mrs W. Davies: Mrs R. Managh and Miss E. McLennan; Mrs I. Owen and Mrs R. Anderson; Mrs R. Bevan and Miss P. Blunden; Mrs Rentaul and Miss V. Blunden; Mrs J. Fergusson and Mrs Young; Mrs F. Cowdrey and Mrs D. Fergusson; Mrs Dock and Mrs Ashworth; Mrs Amadio and Mrs O’SuHivan; Mrs Ball and Miss Beattie; Mrs Nairn and Mrs E. Cowdrey. The men’s championships were commenced during the week-end, when the first round was played in extremely' cold weather, there being a strong southerly wind. There are still a few first-round games to be played, and players are asked to get them off as soon as possible. The second round will, where possible, be played next week-end. For the stroke competition, played in conjunction with the first round of the championship, D. Fergusson and D. Fergusson tied with nett 72. Rugby Football. Halcombo enthusiasts had a feast of football on Saturday, when both the seniors and the juniors played on the home ground. The seniors, playing against Taihape Town, lost by the narrow margin of 19—15. The game was very even and the spectators were kept at a high pitch of enthusiasm. At half time Taihape were leading by 10—9, R. Johnson and D. Hughes having scored tries and Hartley a penalty goal for the home team. In the second spell the hopes of the local supporters ran high when tries were scored by Ashton and Dais, but neither being converted they were unable to overhaul the visitors’ score. The play was mostly confined to the forwards and was marred by many penalty kiexs. In the forwards, D. Hughes, R. Johnson and N. Williams played very well, while Hartley, Blunden and J. Hughes were the pick of the backs. Mr G. Burgess was Cue referee. The junior game against Marton Old Boys resulted in a win for that team by 11—9. Halcombe’s points were scored from tries by D. Page, J. Hughes and W. Moran. Valedictory. A pleasant function took place last week when the friends of Mr George Nation met to bid him farewell. Mr C. Scott expressed the regret or tho assembly at Mr Nation’s impending departure, and wished him every success at Tolagc Bay'. Ho then presented the guest of honour with a travelling rug. . Mr Nation suitably responded.
