Register, a wealthy negro laud* owner, ran amok and shot dead his wife and a white man and wounded throe others before he was shot dead by a petrol station attendant. Register, who owns several oil wells, first killed his wife with a rifle. He then critically injured a negro farm employee and marched along the highway, where he encountered a white farmer driving his cows home. Register shot him dead and, continuing on his way, met a negro whom he wounded. He then fired on a passing motor-car containing a white man and his wife, shattering the former’s arm and killing a dog. A group of men, ail armed, barricaded the road. Register opened fire, but the first shot of the attendant, who was among the barricade party, killed him instantly.
