British Farm Policy

MR. CHAMBERLAIN EXPLAINS HIS RECENT SPEECH United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, July 6. The Prime Minister, Mr Neville Chamberlain, explained his speech on British farming policy at Kettering to a’ meeting of members of the House of! Commons representing agricultural districts. He said he felt that in the light of the defence preparations there was no need to embark on artificial expansion of Home production. Moreover, there could be nothing worse for agriculture than such expansion, which it was certain could not be maintained. The Government’s policy, said Mr Chamberlain, was to enable agriculture to be prosperous in peacetime and capable of expansion in wartime.

He added that the Ottawa agreement had convinced him of the necessity of regulating the production and importation of agricultural products in. the interest of stable prices. The members, in thanking the Prime Minister, expressed the opinion that the statement would remove misunderstanding.
