Sparks Fly in Lithuania

GERMAN MEMELANDERS CAUSE TROUbixB (British Official Wireless.) Received Thursday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, July 6. The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, stated in the Commons: “The British Charge d'Affaires at Tokio who has just returned from a visit to Memel, reports that somewhat serious rioting occured at the port on June 20 and 28 when demonstrations by German Memelanders on the arrival of German steamers were followed by clashes between them and Lithuanians, resulting on the latter occasion in the death of one Lithuanian and the wounding of others by the autonomous police. The Charge d’ Affaires is satisfied that both the Lithuanian and autonomous authorities are alive to the necessity of preventing a recurrence of such incidents as took place and the position will now return to normal. ’ *
