Woodville Women’s Institute

There was an exceptionally largo attendance at the W.L meeting held on Tuesday, at which Mrs. A. Harris (vicepresident) ably presided. Five now members were nominated and welcomed. It was decided to forward a gift of eggs to the stall at the annual conference and donations may be left at Mrs. Kirkpatrick’s shop. The arts and crafts classes will resume on Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m. in the hall, when floral work will be demonstrated. The wellladen trade stall did brisk business, a general clearance being made. An appeal was made for members to join the Red Cross Society classes, which commence in August. A donation was made towards the Chinese relief funds. Mrs. Harris, on behalf of members, conveyed thanks and appreciation to Mrs. H. P. Horne, for her services to the town and district during her term as Mayoress, and presented her with a lovely bouquet. Mrs. Horne was completely surprised and thanked all for their kindly sentiments, saying whatever slie had done had been a joy and pleasure to her. The competition resulted: Smocking, Miss Pedersen 1, Mrs. J. Arlidge 2; wood fibre flowers, Mrs. J. Arlidge 1, Miss D. Milner 2; best flower, Mrs. Ik Hutching 1, Miss Beattie 2. The drama circle entertained with the drama which will bo staged at the Bush-YCairarapa Festival competitions, which begin in the hall on Friday evening and continue on Saturday, when the winners of the drama, folk dacing and glee singing sections will provide the entertainment, The glee singers contributed two items, entitled "Elegies of the Sea” and “Aloha,” each number being well received.
