Shannon
From Our Own CorrespoudentVisiting Footballers Entertained, There was an influx of visitors from Wellington on a recent Sunday, when over fifty persons left the train at Shannon. In the main they represented a railwaymen’s week-end* football team, brought up by Mr McKinley, late secretary of the Shannon Football Club, to play a friendly game with a Shannon team. Mr Bromley was the manager of the railwaymen’s team. The party, which included several ladies, were entertained at the local hotels, and after dinner left for Mangaore in cars kindly placed at their disposal by Messrs D. Higgie. W. Stuart Forbes Jr.. O. Larsen, Robbie Bros., A. Richards, A. Gillespie, S. Pedersen, Takari and a taxi. Mr A. Blackwood conducted the party On a tour of the power house, and later in the afternoon a football match was played at the recreation ground, where the railwaymen defeated the local team by 3 goals to nil. The visitors expressed their appreciation of Hie generosity extended and the entertainment provided for them, and said how much they had enjoyed the day’s outing. A number of local people saw them off at the station, where the Maoris gave a farewell haka as the train moved out.
