Brass Gun Back-fires
INCIDENT ON CUTTY SARK LONDON, June 16. As Commander G. C. Steele, superintendent of the Thames Nautical Training College, fired a farewell salute from a brass cannon on board the Cutty Bark, the famous clipper ship, as she was leaving Falmouth for London, the gun back-fired and iht a quantity of powder on the deck. Commander Steele’s clothing was set on fire. He rushed across the deck and his colleagues tore off his clothes. He was taken to shore in a launch and admitted to hospital suffering from severe burns.
