Jews Plunged Into Terror
Berlin’s Outburst CAMPAIGN OFFENDING PUBLIC OPINION United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. BERLIN, June 17. Tnousands ot Jew's have been plunged into a state of terror as a result of Berlin’s outburst of antiSemitism, the secret police hourly rounding up dozens. It is estimated that nearly 1600 were arrested during the week. The relatives were not informed of the reason for their arrest or of their fate. w-./ish shops throughout the city are Joslng, fearing violence. The Government insists that the arrests are purely directed against criminals. Despite every effort to whip up public resentment, the crowds watching c-.e persecution appear sympathetic toward the Jews. The campaign is obviously offending public opinion. The Vienha correspondent of The Times says that the Jewish persecution in Vienna is most bitter. Thousands wait all night outside the English and American consulates for the purpose oi registering for migration, which usually is impossible. There can be no Jewish family in the country without or two members under arrest. The Telegraph’s Vienna correspondent says that manacled with chains, Karl Lang, Austria’s public executioner, who officially strangled a number of condemned Nazis, has also been executed. MORE ANTI-SEMITE MOVES Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. BERLIN, Juno 19. Fresh anti-Semitic moves include the ordering of all Jewish shops to have their names painted on the windows in white letters. Traffic police have received lists of Jewish car owners and their car numbers accompanied by orders to arrest them at sight.
