Hockey in Feilding

NOTES ON THE GAMES AND PLAYERS (By ‘'Sticks"). The 1938 season for hockey in Feilding promises to be very good, more especially with the men’s competitions, in which there are six teams. Having played the third game in the first round they seem to have settled down to the game, although it is still far from being what is termed first-class hockey. In view of the fact that we will be having the Indians in Feilding, “Sticks' 1 urges the players to get right on to their game and cut out those obstructions and the hard hitting. “No, you cannot blame tho umpires for the obstructions, so get those rule books out and read them.” You have good grounds to play on now, so you will not be able to blame anything or anybody but yourselves. It is quite pleasing to seb two new teams on the field this year. Some older members of the Wanderers Club have broken away and formed an Old Boys Club. Quite a good move, “Old Boys,” to give the younger boys a chance to form their teams. Then we have another new team in the Kia Oio Club, from Onepuhi. There are a few old rep. players in the team who should be a great help to the younger members in the club. Colyton Club seem to be the same team as last year, although “Sticks” notices that B. Benge is out again with his good work.

The Swifts Club has formed two clubs this season, namely, Rovers and Pirates, and for a young club this is really good work on their part. We hope they will stick together Kr they are the future rep. players. The Wanderers have quite a few new and young players this year and with the older members away from them they will have to battle hard to get into the running, but from the way they are shaping already they will not bo long in showing what they can do.

“Sticks" understands that G. Packer, Feilding, ex rep. player, has them in hand and is coaching them along. ‘ ‘ Good business, George.'' Now a few notes about the players. For Colyton R. Merritt, at half, will not push that ball about. Get riti of it, Rube, there are ten other players. S. Hocken is nowhere near his old form; be careful, Selwyn, and W. Hocken has played much better hockey. Bill, those shots at goal, take more time. R. Funston is playing a very nice game this year so far; stick to it, Kus., for look out, the ‘ ‘ Indians are coming. ” C. Curtis is playing a sound game at back, but oh, that.stick over your shoulder—keep it down. A. H. Packer for Old Boys is bach to form again this year, but is inclined to wander from his position. Stop in your position, Albert, and smack them into the net. “Sticks” noticed that McMurray, a new player for Old Boys, plays quite a nippy game on the right wing and right wingers are hard to get. T. Packer in tho same club, has slowed up m his work, but with some more practice we hope he will get back to his rep. form. “Sticks” did not notice S. Menzies out on Saturday. We hope he will bo turning out again, for so far he has been playing his old safe and pleasing game. Wanderers, what have you done to T. Borich? He seems to be out of his position. Last year Tony played u sterling but this year ho hat failed to show his true form. W. Reid is playing a safe game at back for Wanderers, but if he was well enough to get up in the halves he would help them a lot more. C. Fisher seems to be playing a better game this year, but obstructs too much. Watch that obstruction, Colin. {Swifts have collected a new player iu Dalzlel, who seems to have knowledge of the game, but will not keep his position. Let the other players feed you and the whole team will do better. G. Rosoman is playing a great game this year, but runs round the paddock unnecessarily. You can do more work, George, with less energy if you watch your game. Young B. Morris is doing good work for his club and With coaching and advice will make quite a good player. E. Batten on the wing would be a good winger if he learns to take that ball with him instead of running over the top of it. “Push that bail out in front of you.'' Kia Ora are fortunate in securing C. Whiteman for the goalie, for Cyril needs no introduction to Feilding players. He seems to be kicking them out fairly well this year. T. Keriami at back seems to be bashing the ball in any old direction. He would do better if ho passed the ball to the other players. He cjCh hit a ball alright, but should learn to put it where it will do more good. P. Lofts does not seem to be up to true form yet, but let's hope ho will do so beforo long. Iv. Armstrong o*i tho wing has plenty of dash, but should try to control the ball a bit more, otherwise his speed is of no use to him. In conclusion, boys, read your rule •books; you will find them good reading.
