Status of Pacific Islands

PROSPECT OF JOINT JURISDICTION United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. NEW YORK, May 8. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says Britain and the United States are approaching an agreement regarding the status of Canton and Enderbury islands with the prospect of an arrangement for joint jurisdiction. It is expected a formal announcement will be made soon of the general terms and that then detailed supplementary collateral questions will be taken up, including the status of other small islands throughout the Pacific. Jurisdiction over these islands is an open question in view of the uncertainty surrounding their discovery. It is eventually intended to carry the negotiations to the Antarctic area later, including other countries with interests in the areas under scrutiny.
