Bobby Calf Industry

PRODUCERS’ REFERENDUM FAILS HAMILTON, May 2. Regret that a recent referendum of producers to decide whether a national co-operative scheme for the collection of bobby calves and the control of the bobby calf industry had resulted in a majority of producers opposing the project was expressed by Mr. W. A. Phillips, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig-Market-ing Association, Limited, in a circular to suppliers. Mr. Phillips said that no greater opportunity had ever been offered to producers, and their failure to avail themselves of it was in his opinion due to tho lack of clarity in the manner in which tho issue had been presented. In all areas where a definite affirmative lead had been given by dairy company directors, a favourable result had been secured, while where this lead had not been given the issue had been answered in the negative. Tho proposals represented a system of purely co-operative control of the collection and marketing of bobby calves, added Mr. Phillips. Had a favourable answer been given the Government would have acceded to tho New Zealand Dairy Board’s request to give the necessary legislative authority to proceed with the scheme.
