Woodville Women’s Institute

The monthly meeting was held ou Tuesday, May 3, when Mrs. M. Burnett presided over a very good attendance. Before commeuciug business a motion of sympathy was expressed with the relatives of the late Mrs. M. Wicks, who was an active member, and with Mrs. C. Forbes in the loss of her son. Members sang two verses of the hymn, “Lead, Kindly Light.” Mrs. H. P. Horne, the retiring Mayoress, thanked members for the help and co-operation she had received during her term oi office, and asked for a continuance of the same for tho future Mayoress. Two new members were enrolled, and several were reported by the sunshine committee to be ou the sick list. Appreciative remarks were expressed by the president of the work of three members, Mesdames Elder, Henderson and Miss Stace, who have left the district, and best wishes were expressed for their future welfare. A social afternoon will be held in the W.L hall to-day (Saturday) at 2 p.m., when a good attendance of members aud friends is anticipated. Tho competition for “Best Child’s Lunch” was won by Mrs. Hickson, Mrs. Oliver being second; and for the “Best Flower” competition Mrs. B. Hutching was first and Mrs. L. Hurley second. Mesdames L. Burlace and .1. Lingle were congratulated on their comprehensive reports on the recent federation

meeting, aud received a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs. H. Paterson, of Pahiatua, gave a most interesting and instructive talk on the “Aims and Objects of the W.L,” and spoke of tho educative ideals of the institute and the wide scope for development it opened up for all members in different branches of the work. The speaker particularly stressed the point of encouraging young girls to join the institute where they would have an opportunity of making the most of their talents in handcrafts, drama, etc. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker for her much appreciated talk. Welcomo afternoon tea concluded the meeting.
