Labourer Fined

INTOXICATED IN CHARGE A fine of £7 and costs, allowing time to pay, was the penalty inflicted on a labourer, Henry William Ireland, of Maharahara West, for driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated, when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, Woodviile, before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., yesterday. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, pleaded guilty. .Stating the case for the police, Constable L. Skinner said that on April 18 last, accused,, who was driving a light truck, had collided at the Post Office corner with a car proceeding from Palmerston North to Dannevirke. “On arriving at the scene,” continued the constable, “I found the accused was intoxicated. He had never been before the Court previously but bo had several prohibition orders against him. In view of the fact that he is a married man with a wife and family, we would suggest that he be prohibited from driving for a long time, rather than a fine which would only inflict hardship on his family.” Replying to a question from the Bench, accused said he had never held a driver’s license and that the truck was usually driven by a friend that lived with him. In convicting accused, Mr. Lawry said he would allow time to pay in view of the casual nature of the man’s employment. Charges were also preferred by the police against Ireland for driving with out a license and having no warrant of fitness. He was convicted on each charge and ordered to pay 10s costs for not having a warrant and a fine oi 10s with costs of a similar amount on the charge of having no license.
