Japs’ Powerful Hit-and-run Fleet
40-KNOT SUPER CRUISERS MYSTERIOUS FLOTILLA IN THE PHILIPPINES Received Wednesday, 9.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 12. The Navy Department has learned that Japan is constructing a powerful hit-and-run fleet of supercruisers unmatched for speed, mobility and striking power. Three ships of 16,000 to 18,000 to**s are being constructed, aimed with eight or nine 12-inch guns with a speed cf 40 knots. In addition she is constructing three 46,000-ton dreadnaught**, five aircraft carriers, 43 destroyers, seven light cruisers and eight submarines, a total of 66 fighting vesels against Rposevelt’s planned 46.
The Manila correspondent of the United Press reported that part of the United States Asiatic fleet at present manoeuvring in the China Sea may be ordered to Davao (on the south-east coast -of the Philippines) to investigate the presence of 22 mysterious vessels resembling Japanese destroyers. The Customs collector at Davao said a flotilla either of destroyers or submarines did not display their colours and repeatedly ignored wireless identification requests.
