Of Local Interest
The Public Works Department has made a start on the construction of a camp, presumably for the men who are to be employed on the Makuri Gorge widening work. The site is on Airs. Waring ’s property, Pori, in the Masterton electorate. After the unbearable heat of the past few days, the rain which fell early yesterday morning in Pahiatua and district was most welcome. In all 2.24 inches were recorded, which is one of the heaviest falls for many years. The State Advances Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand is arranging a loan of £6OOO to the Tararua Electric Power Board at 31 per cent. The Mangamutu Miniature Bifle Club plans to transfer its activities to Pahiatua this season, and arrangements are proceeding to install the range in the Drill hall, the lessee of which has made very generous terms to the club. The majority of the club members reside in Pahiatua, and the proposed change will doubtless be the means of other town residents joining the club, which last year won the Bush Association’s championship. The Tararua Electric Power Board has received notification from the Engineer-in-Cbief and Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department to the effect that the petition of the ratepayers of the Akitio County Council is in order and will be subject to an Order-in-Council without delay.
