Education Bill
HEARING OF EVIDENCE BEGINS Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 5. The hearing of evidence by the Education Amendment Bill Select Committee, began at a sitting this morning in Parliament Buildings, the Rev. C. Carr, presiding. The proceedings were open to the Press and public. Evidence to-day was heard from Messrs H. A. Heron, president, and A. H. Thom, honorary secretary, of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Assistants’ Association, which approved of the reduction of the number ot governing bodies and the inclusion of teachers on education boards.
In regard to the School Council’s Association they were divided in their opinion, but the majority of members approved of the functions proposed for the councils, but asked for a clearer definition of the rights of the council in connection with making teachers’ appointments.
The association approved of the appointment of local education officers within the board and raising the school leaving age to 15.
