Alighting on Warships
FIRST AEROPLANE EXPERIMENTS Contributing to a discussion in the Dali/ Telegraph about the first descent by an aeroplane on to the deck of a warship, Group-Captain Harry R. Busteed , of Melbourne, recalls how FlightLieutenant Dunning first accomplished the feat on H.M.S. Furious on the way to Scapa Flow during the Great War, but lost his life when making a third attempt. Group-Captain Busteed and FlightLieutenant F. J. Rutland, the only air men sent up at the battle of Jutland, experimented with a newly-fitted afterdeck with a view to arresting the aircraft’s landing run. The airflow was so bad owing to the ship’s motion that the aeroplane got out of control, and Flight-Lieutenant Rutland was hurled into the sea. Group-Captain Busteed was the first airman to alight on 11.M.5. Furious while she was at anchor.
