Twenty-five Years at Sea

SPLENDID RECORD OP LINER NIAGARA I Plying the highways of the Pacific Ocean, the Canadian Australasian liner Niagara will have completed 25 years of continuous service before she makes another southward voyage. The anniversary of the Niagara ’a first visit to Auckland on May 9, 1913, will be celebrated when the vessel is at Vancouver at the conclusion of her next voyage north. The ship has standing to her credit some 150 round voyages between Australasia and Canada, and her record is unblemished by serious accident, although in the war years her

commander, and officers occasionally had reason to worry for the safety of the ship. On one occasion, it is said, the Nia-

gara was spotted” by a seaplane from tho German raider Wolf, but by elapping on speed she was enabled to outdistance the enemy. In those years the Niagara maintained her service, steaming at night without her lights, and

sometimes deviating from her course for safety.

The Niagara in her lifetime has had only six permanent masters. The present commander is Captain W. Martin.
