Old Bridge Will be Replaced
FERRO-CONCRETE STRUCTURE. The photograph at the top of this page of the present bridge over the Alanawatu river at jVhirokino shows clearly one of the main features of its design. Between the two centre piers is a special span so constructed that it can be swung sideways to provide an opening for the passage of vessels. To-day such a provision would be considered unnecessary, but when the bridge was built the authorities considered it prudent not to close the river for navigation by vessels that would not be able to pass below the bridge ingThe remaining unit of the Whirokino deviation will be a ferro-concrete bridge on a line with, the new roadway, which will replace the old wooden oneway bridge which has now reached the stage when it can no longer meet the demands made upon The contract for this job has not yet been let. To allow for this a filling lias been made on the south side of the river.
