Golden Wedding Celebrations At Ashhurst
MR AND MRS HOLDCROFT HONOURED A very pleasant afternoon and evening were spent at “Hillcrest,” Ashhurst, on. Saturday. The occasion being to mark the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs G. H. Holdcroft who were married at Kidsgrove, North Staffordshire, England, by Rev. G. Bowen, in 1888. Friends had come from all parts of the North Island bringing presents and a beautifully decorated cake surmounted with 50 golden kewpies. Each guest received a piece of cake with a kewpie. Many congratulatory letters and telegrams were received. Toasts were given by Mr Williamson, Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., and Mr W. H. Sadler (old friends). Games, etc., and music by Mr. H. Roberts, Dannevirki (guitar), Mr L. Evans (swanee whistle), Mr Williamson (concertina), was enjoyed, concluding with community singing led by the musicians. Proceedings terminated at midnight after a very enjoyable day. Mr and Mrs Holdcroft and family came out to New Zealand on the Nairnshire” 30 years ago.
