Farmers’ Threat of Strike

ATTITUDE IN DUNEDIN Per Pi ess Association.. DUNEDIN, Last Night. The threat that farmers of the Dominion would have to take a stand against the Government’s attitude and that this action might take the form of a strike was made by Mr. R. J. E. Smith at a meeting of the provincial council of the Farmers’ Union. Mr. Smith said that watersiders and freezing-workers could strike successfully, and if the farmers stood together for one week, refusing to send meat or milk away, the Government might listen. The council carried a resolution that the Dominion executive be asked to approach the Government with a view to raising the exchange rate except on British goods to compensate for increased costs due to recent legislation and that the tariff be reduced accordingly.
