Pahiatua Women’s Institute

ANNUAL MEETING On Tuesday afternoon tlie Sunday School of St. Peter*B Anglican Church was well filled for the twelfth annual meeting of the Pahiatua Women's Institute, Mrs. E. B. Watson presiding.

Her motto was, “The bravest trophy ever man obtained is that which he himlelf hath gained.' * An invitation was read from the Mangatainoka Institute to attend the latter's birthday dance, to be held shortly.—Accepted.

The president also read out an intimation advising of the council meeting of the Bush-Wairarapa Federation at Carterton and inviting delegates to be sent and calling nominations for officers. Mesdames J. D. Wilson and J. D. Thomson were elected to represent the institute and the following were nominated as members of the federation committee: Mesdames R. C. Austin, C. Jennings, A. W. Mobbs, E. B. Watson, T. Clarke, J. D. Mackay, F. Joblin, J. D. C. Crewe, N. M. Burnett, W. H. Nixon, -A*- Keir- and Miss Wolters. Mrs. N. A. Prussing (secretary) read the annual report which was subsequently adopted. The financial statement, reveuling a credit of £5 9s 5Jd, was road by Mrs. R. L. Darley, this being duly adopted. In speaking to the reports, Mrs. Watson mentioned that the attendances were somewhat smaller than they should have been and remarked that now they had a panel of demonstrators no doubt same would improve. The speaker acknowledged the help given by the members and the executive, particularly mentioning how sorry they were to lose Mrs. Prussing, who had done such good work as secretary. Mrs. Austin seconded the adoption of the reports, which were duly carried. As a past president, Mrs. J. D. Wilson said she had been associated with Mrs. Prussing for a number of years and added her tribute to the latter's good wok. The federation president, Mrs. Crewe, endorsed the previous speakers' re-, marks and Mrs. Austin (secretary) did likewise. Mrs. Wilson paid a tribute to Mrs. Darley for her good efforts as treasurer. Mrs. T. Clarke was thanked for the report on the activities of the drama circle, whose pianist, Mrs. W. H. Murch, was also given a hearty vote of thanks. Presentations. Before Mrs. Watson retired from the chair, Mrs. Crewe paid a tribute to the latter's work as president, saying she had been very sweet and nice to get on with and all members had greatly enjoyed the meetings over which she had

presided. The speaker then presented Mrs. Watson with a beautiful bouquet which the recipient modestly acknowledged. Mrs. Prussing was also presented with a bouquet and she remarked that she was sure she had not done anything to deserve it. The president followed this up by presenting Mrs. Prussing with a crystal vase and serviette ring from the members, extending with it their love and best wishes, which Mrs. Prussing reciprocated, saying that she had enjoyed doing what little she had done for the institute. Altogether fourteen nominations were received for the eleven positions on the committee and the tellers (Mesdames I. M. Graham and A. J. Goer) subsequently announced the election of Mesdames J. D. C. Crewe, T. Clarke, W. A. Carthew, A. W. Hamilton, T. J. Cotter, R. L. Darley, L. W. C. le Comte, J. D. Thomson, W. Hall Watson, H. Mackley, and J. D. Wilson. Mrs. T. Clarke was unanimously elected president and was given an ovation when she took the chair. Mrs. Clarke returned thftnks for her election and said it would be very hard to follow after Mrs. Watson, who had always ben so nice and was such a capable president. Mrs. Clarke made a plea for the co-operation of all members which she felt sure would be whole-heartedly given. Mesdames J. D. Thomson, J. D. C. Crewe, W. A. Carthcw and J, D. Wilson were elected vice-presidents, j The appointment of the welfare committee resulted in the re-election of Mesdames W. L. Tattle, W. H. Purdie and A. A. Vaughan. Mrs. Clarke was re-elected convener of the dramatic circle. Mr. G. Godfrey Taylor, who has carried out the duties of hon, auditor for the past ten years, was reappointed auditor. Mrs. R. L. Darley was appointed Press correspondent. The distribution of the Home and Country magazine was left in the hands of Miss Ruskell, was stated to have

done wonderful work In this connection. The hostesses for the day—last year's committee—were accorded a hearty vote of thanks, as were the two scrutineers and the Press.
