Nireaha
Prom Our Own Correspondent. Mr B. Dickson, of Auckland, is spending a month’s vacation with Mr and Mrs C. Mills. The lai’gest wild boar secured locally for many years fell to the rifle of Mr F. B. Rossiter recently. Following reports of much rooting and tracks of a large pig behind Mr T. Priest’s property at Putara, Mr Rossiter, in company with Mr C. Taylor, of Eketahuna, set out one morning at six o’clock. After about an hour’s travelling, the dogs could' be^.hcard with a bale in a small gully. On approach of the pig it was found to be a large sandy and black boar. A well placed shot soon made a certain kill. A return was then made to the farm, where a horse was procured for the purpose of dragging the pig home The animal was in excellent condition and its live weight was a few pounds short of three hundred-weight. The tusks, an excellent pair, measured eight inches each. A party of Nireaha shooters _ recently made an ascent of Mt. Ruapai, where deer were found to be numerous, twelve being secured. Stags will commence to roar in about a fortnight’s time, and al ready many enthusiasts have made preparations for their annual excursion. Deer have not been destroyed in such numbers this year as in past years, the main reason being the drop in value of deer hides from about 7/6 to 3/-. A meeting of the Nireaha Sports Club was attended by about 14 persons. It was decided to hold the usual ball on Easter Monday night. The following committee was elected: R. J. Lawrence (secretary), L. Hansen, J. Payne, T. Lock, C. Hansen, W. Holloway, C. Goss and F. Holloway. The secretary was authorised to make arrangements re music, catering, etc. Every effort will be made to make this function an outstanding success. Rifle Club.
