NEW * The Washington represen 4 " -re of tb' united Press states that he has learned hat the United States has rejected applications by British and Netherlands interests for permission to establish commercial air bases at Hawaii on the ground that America is not willing to expose its Hawaiian defences to view for flag airliners over which she would have little control. There Is also the likelihood that, if the application were granted, others, including Japan, would seek the same concession.

The British proposed to use the base as a stopping-point between Australia and Vancouver.

“In the present negotiations Great Britain must, of course, take ipto account New Zealand’s sensibilities,” says the New York Sun in an editorial on America’s negotiations with Britain concerning the ownership of Pacific islands. “The Ministry is, in fact, caught between two fires, but it may cite the possible usefulness to Imperial defence of having the United States possess another stake in the South Pacific.”

The American State Department has received the British Note formally reserving British rights at Canton and Enderbury Islands. It is understood that the Note contained proposals for a solution of the controversy, and it is expected that an effort will be made to determine principles which will not only settle the status of Canton and Enderbury Islands but will pave the way for adjustment of the ownership of numerous other small islands in the Pacific.
