SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES WON BY : NUFFIELD AJAX BRILLIANT IN THE NEWMARKET KEITH VOITRE RIDES WINNER OT ESSENDON STAKES United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 6.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, Feb. 27. The weather was fine and there was a good attendance at the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting at Flemington. Early morning rain had no effect on the going and f ast time was registered by the hurdlle winner Coster Lad, who showed great promise. There was an exciting finish in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, half a length separating the iirst four horses. Nuffield, the winner appeared to have something in reserve. Destiny Bay created a surprise forward showing. Lady Montague ran a good race, Pandava hung out badly and Limulet was disappointing. The winner hus now won four times in succession in five starts. Damalis had an easy w,in in the Essendon Stake:?. Elanage ? s chances were spoilt by hanging out badly in the straight. Young Crusader ran a fair race but Gold Rod made a poor showing. Ajax had a brilliant win in the Newmarket Handicap. He has now registered 10 wins and three seconds in 14 starts and he has now won £15,545 in stakes. Trainer Musgrave won the Newmarket previously with Amata and Parkwood. Ajax’s weight, 9.0, is the highest ever carried to victory in the race by a thre 3-year-old. Ena ran a great race, also El Golea. Last year’s winner, Auno’u Star, was a close fourth. Amiablo was never dangerous. The St. Leger Stakes proved an exercise gallop for Hua, who has now won £10,555 in stakes. He cost 750gns. as a yearling. Ib was trainer Scobie’s fourth Leger suscess. Irving won the Brunswick Stakes narrowly from the fast-finishing Pooley Bridge, who enhanced his Australian Cup prospects. The pacemaker, Tuckerbox, was a close third, but Red Manfred tired.
