A Newmarket Handicap candidate, Silent Sentry, created a surprise by winning end to end the Newmarket Trial Stakes at Mentone to-day, in which Hammerhead was unplaced. The Namakia-trained Fryer won Berkshire mile, giving apprentice W. Hooten his first win here. Tooley Street is expected to make an Australian debut in the Welter at Mornington to-morrow. RANGITIKEI HANDICAPS Handicaps for the Rangitikei autumn meeting are due to appear on Monday morning and the acceptances close at 9 o’clock on Tuesday evening. Mr. E. V.
