Royal Romance and Riotous Were well backed in the Westmero Hack Hurdles, but Artful Dodger sprang a doube-figure surprise. Lifeguard w int out to a six-lengths break at the first fence, but lost ground! at his jumps, being joined by Royal Romance and Count Willonyx, with : Kentucky Song and Riotous in front of Artful Dodger. Passing the stands, Lifeguard was just in front of Royal Romance and Riotous, with Count Willonyx, Kentucky Song and Artful Dodger following in close order. Royal Romance ran into the lead at the five furlongs, with Riotous alongside him and Count Willonyx, Kentucky Song, Artful Dodger and Lifeguard wero next. At the next fence the rider of Royal Romance lost both irons and across the top Riotous took the lead, but first into tho straight were Kentucky Song, Count Willonyx, Riotous and Royal Romance, almost in lino, with Artful Dodger commencing a run. At tho distance Artful Dodger hit the front and carno on to win comfortably by a length und a-half from Count Willonyx. Two lengths back was Riotous, just in f.-ont of Royal Romance. Kentucky Song and Davistock were next in order and the others were tailed off. Surmount a Ehort-priced Favourite. Surmount was backed down to a short price for the Juvenile Handicap and duly won, though only by a narrow margin over Russian Ballet. Drachma was left through reluctance to face tho L arrier, and Royal Ace showed out first, being displaced within a furlong by Surmount and Footloose, with R oyal Ace and Russian Ballet following. Crossing the top, Surmount was clea r of Footloose, with Russian Ballet three lengths back, just in front of Filetto. On the turn for homo Surmount and footloose were on terms, with Russian Ballet on the rails behind them. Russian Ballet forged through inside the distance but failed by a head to catch Surmount. Two and a-half lengths back was Footloose, with Filetto and Dark Eagle next to finish. Shangri-lia Won Well. In an even pool for the Kai Iwi Maiden Race Scarf Dance carried a little more than Sigurd and Shangri-La, and the last-named eventually won from Gold Glare. After considerable delay at the barrier they got £tway fairly well, Sigurd showing out f rom Shangri-La, Zilpah, Scarf Dance and Gold Glare. Then Shangri-La ran into the load from Scarf Dance,, Sigurd, Nigger Mark Gold Glare and Golden Pam. The iastnamefl moved up fast to join ShangriLa at the half-mile and the pair came across the top several lengths ahead of Scarf Dance, Nigger Mark and Sigurd, but the field closed the gap as they ran for the straight. Golden Pam ran out wide at the outrance to the sraight, and Shangri-La, came on to win by a length and a-half from Gold Glare, who finished fast to beat Sigurd by a neck on the post. Scarf Dance was a close fourth, and then came Some Brandy and Golden Pi.m. Zilpah fell at the entrance of the straight. Nice Effort by Conveyor. Five started in the Victory Hack Handicap, with apprentice riders up, and Conveyor was favourite, a little better backed than Amatory and Ilias. Ilias was ii rst to show out from Parry, Amatory, Student Princo and Conveyor, and running down to the five furlongs Amatory joined Ilias, with Parry and Conveyor just behind them. Then Student Prince moved up behind Ilias and Amatory, and the three came round the turn together, ahead of Conveyor, who came with the last run after Ilias had appeared to have the race in hand at the distance, the favourite winning by half a length. Ilias was a neck in :Eront of Student Prince, who beat Amatory by a short head for third place. 3 5 arry was only half a length away. Icing Wins Easily. Icing carried £SO more than Malibu and Royal Choice in the Tayforth Hack Handicap and the favourite duly won. Out from the tapes, Lady Hoariri followed Malibu, and the latter was joined in the lead at the six furlongs by Captain Treville, with Lady Hoariri, Royal Choice and Bonny Glow next and Icing last. Tho favourite was still at the rear running past the half-mile, but the field was bunched, with Bonny ! Glow moving up fast. Turning for home, Captain Treville had headed Malibu, and the pair were closely attended by Bonny Glow and Royal Choice, with Icing* coming fast on the outer. Once straightened up Icing ran past the leaders and came on to win by a length from Bonny Glow, who was three lengths in front of Royal Choice. Then came Malibu, Captain Treville and Lady Hoariri, almost in line. Decisive Victory for Brazen King. Catalogue was the favourite, for the Wanganui Cup, and there was solid support also for Borgia, with Master Cykion, Francis Drake and the bracket also well backed, b it Brazen King sprang a mild surprise. Francis Drake began fast with The Bigot, Sergia and Race Boy, but ran wide and carried The Bigot aut, Race Boy leading up the straight from The Bigot, Sergia, Francis Drake, Catalogue, Master Cyklon, Lowenberg and The Buzzer. The Biggot ran up to Race |Boy at the six furlongs, and the pair, cleared: at six lengths in front of Sergia, Francis Drake, Master

Cyklon, Lowenberg and Catalogue. Running down to the half-mile, Race Boy and The Bigot were still clear, but tho others had closed the gap, Sergia, Catalogue and Brazen King being a couple of lengths back and Master Cyklon, - with The Buzzer and Lowenberg commencing to move up fast. Three furlongs from home Brazen King had run up fast and he assumed the lead across the top, turning for home ahead of Sefgia, The Buzzer, Caalogue and Middle. Over the final stages nothing looked like catching Brazen King, who wonby two lengths, with Lowenberg beating Middle by a head for second place. A length back wero Sergia, The Buzzer and Francis Drake, almost in line, and then came Master Cyklon and Catalogue. Laughing Lass Wins in Smart Time. Laughing Lass was elected favourite for the Flying Handicap, but it was an even betting race and she returned a decent price when she won. Silvanus dwelt and for the best part of a furlong Debham, Laughing Lass. Notium and Aiwai were in line, just in front of Race Call. Running down past the half-mile Laughing Lass had gone out to. lead by three lengths from Debham, Aiwai, Silvanus and Race Call, with Silvanus still well back. First into the straight by two and a-half lengths from Race Call, Notium and Silvanus, Laughing La3s came on to win by a length and a-half from Notium, with Race Call a length away. Debham was fourth after a gap, and Aiwai was next. Alloa Wins Easily. Gaily, favourite for the concluding event, was well beaten, thd winner being the second favourite, Alloa. Amoroso was first to break the line, with Collodion, Alloa and Gaily in close attendance. Running down to the halfmile, Amoroso was clear of Collodidn, Gaily, Alloa and Cloak, and across the top Amoroso led Collodion, Rhodesian, Gaily and Alloa. Alloa came round the field on the home turn and was not headed, winning by two lengths.
