Women’s Institutes
A special meeting of the Cheltenham Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, Mrs V. Short presiding over a large attendance. A welcome was extended to visitors who were present. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting, members stood as a mark of sympathy with Mesdames Billman and Shepherd. Nominations of officers for the ensuing year were received and it was decided that the committee should consist of twelve members. Cheltenham was successful in gaining a second prize at the Feilding Show for their exhibit and both those who had arranged the entry and sent forward work were thanked for their assistance. A report of the last group meeting held at Utuwai was given by the president who announced that the next group meeting would be held at Waituna when one of the competitions would be for a wool embroidered cushion. On March Bth. members were invited to be present in the Empire Hall, Palmerston North, to hear Miss Courtney speak. The garden notes for seasonal work were given by Mrs Barltrop who spoke of the culture of violets and chrysanthemums. The speaker for the afternoon was Mr L. J. Wild, of the Feilding Agricultural High School. Mr Wild who was enthusiastically received gave a most interesting talk on the impressions he had gained during his recent trip abroad. The time available was all too short and appreciation of his talk was expressed by Mrs W. G. Short and it was hoped that at some later date it might be possible to hear more. The Institute Flower Show is to be held in April and schedules will be available at the next meeting. The awards in the competitions were as follows:—Zinnias, Mrs Hocken .1, Mrs Sinclair 2, Mrs Andrews 3; marigolds, Mrs Hocken l, ,Mrs Andrews and Mrs Stevens (equal) 2; sponge ' roll, Mrs Oliver 1 1 Mrs Fitzpatrick 2.
