At the annual meeting of the Rangitikei School Sports Association it was dec.ded to hold the annual sports gathering iu Alarton about the middle of March and an executive committee was set up to deal with the conditions, programme and grounds. It is anticipated there will be live schools competing for the A grade shield and ten or twelve for the G grade. Learning to Swim. During the past week the pupils of the Tapuae .School, near Wailuna West, were tho guests of the Alarton Dictriet High School. The object of the visit was pri-
marily to teach tho country visitors to swim. The children, who were billeted iu the town, had had little experience in tho water, and achieved the object of their visit by all qualifying for swimming certificates. One boy gained a certificate for 100 yards. Besides performing this, their first object, the visitors were given the opportunity of visiting local industries. For the first time they saw field tiles manufactured, a newspaper printed, wheat ground into flour, and the arrival and departure of the Auckland express. When not engaged in swimming instruction or such outings, the children were attached to classes in the High School for various lessons and observation pei’iods. The trip was in the nature of an experiment and, in achieving its aim, gay© the country children an opportunity of mixing with town children in a large school. The officers and committees of both schools are well satisfied with the results, and there is a possibility of the scheme being extended.
