Manawatu Heads

From Our Own Correspondent. After the rather squally weather during the week, Sunday broke gloriously fine. It Is estimated that 300 cars visited the beach during the day, two picnics being responsible lor a large number. The river was made unpleasant for bathing, due to rain on the East Coast causing a fresh, but conditions at the Ocean Beach were particularly pleasant and a large number were in the water during the day. When the tide receded on Sunday afternoon, the ,river beech, presented an untidy appear- ** 'ance. It was littered from end to end with debris, including dead stock. Much good wood came ashore, resulting in a harvest for residents, who were busily engaged until darkness fell in gathering in supplies, cars, lorries, wheelbarrows and box carts being pressed into service. Beach Improvement Society. The first meeting of the year was held during the week-end, those present being Messrs M. E. Perreau (chairman). A. Alsop (treasurer), O. Coles, W. Ingram, W. Boyce, S. Rosvall, G. Kenyon and the secretary, Mr A. D. Macpherson. After welcoming new members. Air Perreau moved a motion of sympathy with relatives of the late Mr A. G. Dawick. The committee stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mr Perreau spoke of the splendid work performed by Mr Dawick whilst a member of j the Beach Committee, of which he was I treasurer for thirty years. On his retire- | ment two years ago he was elected a life j member. Mr A. Alsop offered to procure a photograph of the late Air Dawick and to have it placed in a suitable position in I the hall. It was decided to write to the! Harbour Board on several matters pertaining to beach affairs. Air W. Ingram agreed to make inquiries as to having the I arteeian well water tested before commencing the work of piping it to the shelter shed. As the Surf Club is still in need of funds, it was decided to offer to cooperate with them in arranging a sports meeting, and also community sings during Easter week. It was decided to ask leaseholders to clear their sections of lupins, as these constitute a fire menace, and also to top trees where necessary. The offer of Mr Stan Rosvall to donate drums for use as rubbish containers was accepted with thanks. It was arranged that a special meeting of the committee be held shortly to discuss finance, when it is hoped there will be a full attendance of members. It is expected that the building of three houses is to be commenced almost immediately, and within the next three months several Palmerston North residents have signified their intention of commencing building operations also. Two houses are in the course of construction at present, one at the west end of Seabury avenue for Mr Dan Read, and the other in Holben parade, for Mr Andrew Newton, of Palmerston North. Personal. Mrs M. MacLeod and Mrs Weekes, daughters of Mr and Airs J. Linklater, will be in residence on the riverfront for the next few weeks. Mr and Mrs P. D. Holland and Mrs K. Skilton (Palmerston North) spent the week-end as the guests of Air and Airs O'Brien. Air and Mrs W. Carruthers and family <Palmerstou North) are camping here for

a fortnight. Mrs Brownie and Master Douglas Brownie spent the week-end with Air F. Brownie. Mr and Mrs A. Arnold (Lower Hutt) are the guests of Air Brownie. Week-end campers wet.- Mr and Mrs O. Andrews and daughter, .dr and Airs V. Turner and family, Air ami Airs G. Darke, and Mr and Airs Polanski and family, all of Palmerston North. Those in caravans were Mrs and Miss L. Bailey, Mrs E. Bailey and family, and Aliss C. Cobb (Palmerston North). Air and Mrs T. Hocking, of Palmerston North, were week-end guests of Air and Mrs Kelvin Dando. Mr and Airs F. J. Jones (Feilding) were In their beach cottage for the week-end. Mr R. Jones accompanied them. Mrs Barnaby and family (Rongotea), and Miss L. Hunt returned to their hames during the week-end. Staff Picnic. Members of the staff of the Palmorston North branch of the A.AJ.P. Society, with their friends, numbering about 70, held their annual picnic at me beach on Sunday iu ideal weather. Organisers for the occasion were Air A. E. Carrington and Air G. Houston. The A.M.P. cup, which is competed for annually, was won by Mr M. Alyers. Other events resulted as follow: 75 yards, ladies, Miss J. Griggs 1; 50 yards, boys, Colin Griggs 1, Wm. Norris 2; wheelbarrow race. Bonny and Bob Houston; teams relay race, Messrs M. Salmon, B. Patten, B. Houston and Joy Morrison. Organised game 3 and lolly scrambles comprised the programme for the children. Takaro Tennis Club. About fifty members or the Takaro Tennis Club attended the annual picnic and sports, which were held at the beach on Sunday. A good day’s outing was due to the efforts of the secretary. Mr J. C. AlcAffee, and a committee consisting of Miss T. BovjS, Messrs L. Farlane. E. Carter and A. Bovis. The sports events resulted as follow: 75 yards, ladies. Miss L.
