Awapni Horses for Wanganui

SATISFACTORY TRIALS RECORDED YESTERDAY,

The Awapuni training centre is well represented at the Wanganui meeting and the track work yesterday was of particular interest. The course proper, with the flags out in the middle, was available and the going was really good. The plough, also, was in perfect order and L, G. Morris preferred the plough to the grass. One of the first out was The Buzzer (I. Howe) who gave a pleasing exhibition over a mile. He began well and going down the back stretch he was getting over the ground very quickly. His time for the last seven was 1.34, and he finished solidly, but the three furlongs from the six to the three he cut out in 38 2-5.

Laughing Lass (Pratt) scampered oyer five, also on the plough, in 1.4 and the last half mile took her 51 1-5. She is in great o rder for Wanganui. The Bigot (Howe) was galloped seven furlongs, finishing in 1.33& with the boy sitting very still over the last bit. His sectional times were: first

three, 38 4-f>; first four, 52; and first five furlongs, 1.6 2-5. He appears to bo in first-class order. Royal Choice (Pratt) was responsible for a smart effort over six furlongs. The start was nearly flatfooted and the first half-mile took 51. From that on Royal Choice was allowed to coast along and the time for the full distance was 1.17 3-5. Clarion Call, looking well, and Great Hope were given strong pace work. Dunmanwa.y (W. Little) and Selkirk (H. Johnstone) were companions over three furlongs and Dunmanway finished in front of Selkirk in 37 3-5. Another cup candidate, Catalogue (A. McDonald) followed the two-year-old on to the course proper, and his task was over a mile. lie ran the first two in 27 and half a mile in 53 2-5. The first five took 1.8 3-5 and the full distance 1.49 1-5. Catalogue went solidly throughout and he could have improved on the time. Merry Thought (Johnstone) and a Thracian colt (Little) ran two furlongs in 26 und the colt was running about a bit. Fairy Day (Parkes) was schooled over three fences. He had a companion and he jumped cleanly. Riotous (W. J. McDowell) and Hirangi (Parkes) were given a similar task and the former jumped brilliantly. An intereg ting sprint was that in which The Crooner (Little) and Surmount (Johnstone) were associated. It was over fivij furlongs on the course proper and Surmount reefed a bit and took time to settle down. They were, soon together, however, and The Crooner, on t he inner, was a short head to the good at the finish. They took 25 1-5 for the first two and they came home the last three in 38 4-5, the full distance tools: 1.4. It was a fine effort and both hit out very boldly. Cletrac (C. Thomson) galloped seven furlongs, the last six taking him L23*. Conveyor (H. Johnstone) and Old Surrey (Little) were associated in a fine work ou t over a mile on the course proper and Old Surrey was on the outer. They hopped away together but Old Surrey fought for his head and he took some steering round the turn. Conveyor soon found his balance and he held a short lead to the half mile, which was reached in 53 4-5. By that time Old Surrey had settled down and there was not much between them at the three, re ached in 1.7, and Conveyor, going comfortably, retained a small margin to the post, the mile being covered in 1.48 2-5.
