Gallops at Woodville

PLEASING TRIALS BY COURTCRAFT, FRANCIS DRAKE AND AIWAI. COURTCRAFT TO START AT TE AROHA. There was some interesting galloping at Woodville yesterday morning and among the trials which must have been satisfactory to the stable, were 'those of Courtcraft, who is to start in the six furlong race at Te Aroha, Francis Drake and Aiwai. The course proper, with the trestles about 12 feet out, was open and the going, with the sting just out, was good. . Courtcraft’s task was over six furlongs. He was ridden by N. Cavaney, and Mr W. H. Gaisford was present to witness the gallop. Beginning short of the six furlong barrier, Courtcraft was soon into his stride. He ran the first two in 25 2-5 and three in 37 4-5, and he maintained an oven to the finish to complete in 1.15 35. He went wonderfully smoothly throughout and he would not have blown a candle out when he was pulled up. Sports Coat (M. Gilmore), who appears to be improving all the time, cut three furlongs out in the smart time of 37 2-5. Aiwai (Cavaney), who is not an energetic track worker, sprinted six furlongs in 1.17, 1.4 2-5 the last five and 39 the last three. F. W.Davis was not certain yesterday morning whether Aiwai would make the trip to Wanganui. Francis Drake (Cavaney), who appears to be in good nick for the Wanganui Cup, was galloped a mile and he went smoothly throughout, averaging about 13 seconds to the furlong. The first three took 39, four 52 1-5, five 1.5 2-5 and he finished resolutely in 1.44 2-5. Cavaney will ride him in his cup engagement. Royal Tinge (Cavaney) sprinted half a mile in 52. The change of quarters appears to have done him no harm. Among the horses out doing pace work were Given and Hazoor, the latter on the lead, Mala, in blinkers, Son and Heir and Golden Ridge. Hazoor has been in Bruce McKay’s charge for some time and three times he has been schooled. Though on his own each time he proved himself a brilliant jumper. Courtcraft, who will be ridden by P. Atkins at Te Aroha, is due to go north on Wednesday night. He will have King’s Lancer as a companion for Mr Gaisford has given King’s Lancer to an Auckland sportsman. WAIRARAPA trots SIR FRANK AND HORI BINGEN ARE PiT SMITH WILL DRIVE THESE PACERS ON SATURDAY From Our Own Correspondent. HAMILTON, Last Night. At Claudelands this morning, E. R. Smith’s horses, Sir Frank and Hori Bingen, were given a final work out before leaving for the Wairarapa meeting. The poles were well out and the footing a little dead. Sir Frank ran a mile and a-half in 3.25 3-5, finishing very strongly to run the last half in 1.4 3-5, and Hori Bingen, after going to the half in 1.10, completed a mile in 2.10. Both pacers are very fit and they should give a good account of themselves on Saturday. Although Sir Frank has failed to win at two miles, he has raced with promise and, being physically fit, he is a prospect for the McDougall Handicap. Hori Bingen will keep his engagement in the Carterton saddle race, in which he will be ridden by D. Fox. Although on 60 yards, Hori Bingen should take some beating. He is also*well placed in the tightei class, the Masterton Handicap, for which Sir Frank is also an acceptor. The horses left here this evening under the care of Fox, and Smith will go through on Friday to drive the pacers.
