On Saturday evening the Ashhurst hall presented a gay and happy scene, the occasion being a social evening tendered the ladies’ committee and workers of the gala day function by the hall committee, as a happy finale to a splendid achievement. The ladies were given a night off, the menfolk having charge of all arrangements, supper and scullery work being creditably carried out. The evening was passed in games, competitions and dancing. Mr H. Bristow gave a song and a haka. Miss Bristow being the accompaniste. Mr Bristow also led a short community sing. The high-light of the evening was the presentation of prizes to the ladies who were “merited” during gala. The ladies must have suspected some such action, and presented the president and secretary with a large paper parcel each, to be opened immediately. After a great deal of unwrapping, two small toy dogs were disclosed. Quite an enjoyable time was spent in dancing. Mrs Hewitt officiated at the piano and Mr J. Hodgett played the accordion. With the intermittent rain throughout the week and then heavy rain on Friday night, the Pohangina river was in High flood on Saturday, being still fairly high on Sunday.
