Japan After Iron in Mexico

UNITED STATES CONCERNED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 11.50 p.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 21. It is learned that Japanese interests are seeking iron properties in Western Mexico, chiefly in the State of Michoacan, and the remainder near the town of Colima, reports the Mexico City correspondent of the New York Times. At present the concessions are held by Bethlehem Steel. The newspaper Excelsior states that a Japanese Government commission is here offering to repair and modernise the large West Coast port of Mazatlau in return for iron concessions. The State Department at Washington said it has not been Informed of the Mexican developments. Some members of Congress expressed the opinion that permitting Japanese** to improve the harbour would amount to giving Japan a naval base on this continent between the United States and the Panama Canal.
