Search Party Reaches Body of Alpinist

GLACIER TRAGEDY VICTIM Per Press Association. FAIRLIE, Last Night. After climbing through conditions made difficult with fresh snow, searchers returned to tho Hermitage to-night with the body of Patrick Carroll who died on Monday from injuries received after falling 40 feet down an ice face when crossing to tlie West Coast by Graham’s saddle on February 11. The body was found at the head of Ranfurly glacier and with his companion, Guide Ronald Gunn, Carroll had evidently strayed from tho accepted route because of the unsatisfactory weather conditions. M. Bowie, chief guide at the Hermitage, who led the main search party, found the body about the 9000-foot level. The discovery was made yesterday morning and the party, after tremendous difficulty, reached Ball hut about G o’clock to-nignv. As shown by his injuries, Carroll evidently fell headlong into a schruttd. In addition to head injuries he had a broken forearm. The body is being conveyed to Timaru to-night, where an inquest will be held.
