Women’s Institute

MAKOMAKO. The February meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Thursday afternoon when there was a good attendance in spite of the inclement weather. Correspondence contained a letter of thanks from the secretary of the disabled soldiers* shop, and one from the acting medical superintendent of Forirua Hospital for assistance given. A letter and other matter from Miss Hazel Johnson replying to enquiries regarding box lectures were discussed and a list from the dressmaking course compiled. Members were asked to send in nominations for next year’s committee before March 3. Potatoes are to be dug and brought to the next meeting. Tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Hoggard and Miss Day. The demonstration for the afternoon, making silk bedspreads carried out from instructions kindly given by Miss Whittaker, Pahiatua, proved most interesting. The monthly competition was floral and being well competed added greatly to the attractiveness of the hall. There were 45 entries. Judging was arranged by popular vote. In the dahlia class, Miss Day was placed Ist and 2nd and equal 3rd with Mrs Vile; gladioli, Mrs Eddie Ist, Mrs Eising 2nd and 3rd; pansies, Mrs Hoggard Ist and 3rd, Mrs Vile 2nd.
