Finnish Barque at Auckland

TWO WOMEN AS PASSENGERS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. After an uneventful voyage of 71 days from Juan de Nova, in the Indian Ocean, to Auckland with a cargo of guano, the Finnish barque Penang reached port to-day. Of 2019 tons gross displacement, tho Penang is one of the best-known ships in the fleet of Captain Gustav Erikson, and she impressed as a sturdy yet dignified vessel. She is commanded by Captain K. V. Karlsson who, aged 33 years, is one of the youngest captains of the Finnish fleet. He is the oldest member of the ship’s complement, which includes two apprentices aged 16 years. As passengers on the Penang are two young women, Miss Dorothy Laird, of Arran, Scotland, and Miss Catherine Bridger, of Wallasey, who joined the ship at Leith (Scotland) in August. Both signed on as nominal members of the crew and are able to keep themselves fully occupied on work about the ship during the voyage. Both hope to make the return voyage in the Penang, which, after discharging her cargo, will sail for South Australia to load wheat for tho United Kingdom.
