Band Contest Starts Monday

On Monday a gala week of attractive and tuneful bind music will begin. This' is the occasion of the New Zealand championship brass band contest and solo competiti ons which are to be held in Palmerston North. The solos will be conducted at the Opera House and the Municipal ha. 1 and tho tests (beginning with the hymn test on Mondav evening) will be held at the A. and P. Association's Showgrounds except that, if the weather is unfavourable, these will be transferred to the Opera House. On Monday evening, at the Opera House, the competitions will commence with the E fl at and EE flat bass solos, to be judged by Mr. E. P. Kerry. The E flat soprano cornet and baritone solo competitions will be held at the same time (commencing at 9 a.m.) in the Municipal haM under Mr. T. Goudall. A feature of Monday's programme will be the street march when the wholo of the 17 bands taking part will march from the band rotunda in the Square at intervals of three minutes, commencing jat 2 p.m. Bands will march to the Showgrounds, and as a prize has been offered for the best exhibition of marching, this should be a prelude to the quickstep to be held on Saturday February 26. On Monday evening the hymn test will be decided, when 17 bands eaeh play their respective choice ("Nearer My God," "Abide With Me," "Wondrous Cross," etc.) before Mr. Kerry. The B grade test will be played on Tuesday and Thursday, the A grade on Wednesday and Friday, and on Saturday next the military quickstep competition will be decided. The whole of the 17 bands will again take part in this contest. As a large attendance is anticipated on the latter occasion, arrangements for reserves have been made (at no extra charge) at Collinson and Cunningb ame's. Season tickets at 7s 6d each admit to all performances and these may be obtained from Messrs Goldfinch and Cousins, W. M. Crystall, N.Z.I. Co., or the secretary's office.
