Government Defeat At Ipswich Poll
BIGGEST SINCE GENERAL ELECTION United Press Association —Bv Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, Fab. 17. The Labour gain at the Ipswich byelection is the biggest Government defeat since the last General Election. Mr. R. Stokes, who was returned, is chairman of the engineering firm of Ransomes and Rapier, whose offer to make shells on a non-profit basis was turned down by the Government last year. He attributes his win to dissatisfaction with the Government’s foreign policy. His opponent, Mr. H. Willink (National Conservative) says Mr. Stokes succeeded because he is a largescale employer.
