E. B. Myer, of Melbourne, Dead
OWNER OF AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST DEPARTMENT STORE
Received Friday, 11.40 p.m. MELBOURNE, Feb. 18.
The death has occurred of Mr. E. B Myer, chairman of directors of the Myer Emporium. Mr. Myer was born at Mogiliso, Russia, in 1875, and arrived in Australia in 1894. He was the first member of the Myer family to come here and founded the Myer drapery business at Bendigo in 190 L He was joined by the late Mr. Sidney Myer, a brother, in 1902, conducting a business in a small shop, each in turn travelling the State while the other watched the Bendigo business. From these beginnings grew the great Myer Emporium at Melbourne, the largest store of its kind in Australia with a capital of £3,000,000. Mr. Sidney Myer died in 1934, Mr. E. B. Myer succeeding him as chairman. His health had been unsatisfactory for some time. He recently visited South Africa on a health trip, but entered the hospital on his return. He was associated with many charitable institutions. He leaves a widow and two sons.
