Women’s Institute

TE ARAKURA. Mrs Haythorne presided over a good attendance at the February meeting. A golden thread talk on the tui was given by Mrs Stone. Mrs L. M. Bradley will speak on the bell-bird next month. Mrs P. D. Brown was congratulated on her outstanding crotchet which was included in the Institute exhibit at the recent show. A demonstration and talk on the hand painting of china and old china by Mrs BowlerWatson, of Palmerston North. Mrs Watson was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The winners of the competitions were:—Shortbread, Mrs E. H. Haythorne I, Mrs McDowall 2, Mrs Palmer 3; article from 1 yard cretonne, Mrs Arthur Griffith 1, Mrs D. Lewer 2; juniors, Miss J. Burnham I, Miss M. Burnham 2. Mrs S. S. Baker was welcomed as a new member. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames H. Swainson, F. Russell, G. Kendrick and Wallace. Hostesses for March will be Mesdames Bradley, Sorenson, Burnham and Stewart. OROUA GROUP. HALF-YEARLY MEETING. The Utuwai Hall was well filled for the half-yearly meeting of the Oroua Group. Visitors were welcomed cordially at door by tho Sunshine members for the day, Mrs J. E. Wingate and Mrs J. M. O'Hagan, of Utuwai Institute. Wall vases containing dahlias and hydrangeas added to the decoration of tho tables, while on the president's table was a vase of Iceland poppies the Institute flower. Mrs Pettigrew was in charge of the competition for shortbread and shoulder sprays. Miss J. Roberts had charge of a large and varied display of arts and crafts by Utuwai members. The president of the Utuwai Institute cordially welcomed all and the meeting opened by tho members of Oroua Group singing “The Ode" with Miss J. Searle at the piano. Mrs T. Smith, Utuwai, entertained with a vocal solo “Many Happy Returns of the Day." Mrs Hirschberg rendered a pianoforte solo and Miss. Alison Wingate a recitation. Mrs Smith later rendered two solos in Maori, by special request. The guest of the afternoon was Mrs Kelso, Dominion organiser for the Women's Institutes, and her talk of the W.I. was indeed inspiring for it mado each one feel that she was needed in this big organisation. Mrs Kelso touched on the Government scheme for adult education, and reminded all that no matter how much education we had had we were still and always would be, students. This enlightening talk was interspersed with humorous anecdotes told in her own fascinating style. Mrs Ivelso’s time was all too short. Miss J. Searle presented Mrs Kelso with a posy made by Mrs Wingate. Mrs Barnicoat moved a vote of thanks to the speaker, to whom musical honours were accorded. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames W. Roberts, Harkness, T. Searle, R. Ckeyne, Misses McEwen, M. Foot and visiting hostesses. An iced cake, beautifully decorated in Iceland poppy shades, which was made and iced by Mrs Billet, held pride of place. Mrs T. Searle, as a senior membe., lighted the five candles which were blown out by Miss L. Cheyne, tho youngest member. Mrs Kelso kindly cut the cake and gave out the two prizes won during the afternoon, to Mrs T. Searle for shortbread, for which Mrs A. Roberts was 2nd, and Mrs A. Uoup 3rd (all of Utuwai). The other prize was won by Mrs Bird, for Apiti, for her shoulder spray. In this Mrs A. Coup was 2nd and Miss Alison Wingate 3rd, both of Utuwai. Mrs V. Short presented the prizes won during the year:—Best bloom, Mrs McEwen 1 and Miss M. Harkness 2; these two prizes were donated by Mrs Wingate and Mrs Enright. The points prizes went to Mrs A. Roberts 1, Mrs McEwen 2, Mrs Wingate 3. During the afternoon birthday greetings were received from Mrs Guthrie for Rangiwahia, Mrs Short for Cheltenham, Mrs Barnicoat for Kimbolton, Mrs Bird for Apiti, Mrs Jensen for Table Flat. Miss Grant sent greetings and an apology for absence. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Short and Mrs Barnicoat for judging and to the hostesses by the chairman. Mrs Stanley voiced appreciation of the splendid work done by Mrs Duncan (the convenor of Group), and Mrs Kelsoof the chairman's work Both were presented with posies by Miss Wingate and Miss M. Harkness and accorded musical honours. Mrs Duncan thanked the hostess Institute. OPIKI. Mrs B. A. Norman presided over a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Opiki Women's Institute on Wednesday. Miss Hazel Johnston, of Massey College, was' the lecturer for the day, explaining courses which could be taken under the Home Science extension scheme. The nominations received for the new committee to be elected at the annual meeting next month were Mesdames J. D. Aitchison, A. Alve, P. R. Krivan, J. Mabey, B. A. Norman, G. Payne, G. J. Wilde, A. E. White G. J. Yule, Misses C. Cooksley, E. Marriott and N. Phillips. The judges of the competitions were Mesdames W. Jackson and W. Irwin. Jam: Mrs L. T. Webb 1, Mrs, F. Nagel 2, Mrs J. A. Cooksley 3. Jelly: Mrs L. T.Webb 1 and 3, Mrs P. R. Krivan 2. Gardening circle: Decorated basket, Mrs J. A. Cooksley I, Mrs L. T. Webb 2. Carnation, Mrs J. A. Cooksley I ! and 2. Gladioli, Mrs H. Arrangements were made for the Institute's sixth birthday party which is to bo held on March 22. Mrs Crowe was welcomed as a new member. A competition far the best worked throwover was wen by Mrs Pinfold. A further competition was won by Mrs G. Edyvean. Vocal solos by Mrs Pusterla and Master Earle Andrews accompanied by Mrs Jamieson, were enjoyed. The hostesses, Mrs Hasloch and Miss D. Smith, served afternoon tea. The competition for next month is the best worked throw-over. KOTAHITANGA GROUP MEETING. There was a representative gathering of institute members when the Kotahitanga group mooting was held last Wednesday. The stage had been effectively decorated with greenery and bowls of zinnias. Mrs J. Macfarlane, president of the Stanway Institute, welcomed all visitors and expressed the hope than they would spend a very enjoyable afuernoon in Stan way. She then called on Mrs Bowater (chairman), and Mrs Mrs Marumaru (convenor), to take over the meeting. It was decided that the next group meeting would be held at Sanson on Wednesday, August 10th, at 1 p.m., Airs Eglington, Sanson, being nominated as chairwoman, and Mrs Davies Halcombe, convenor. The competitions will be:~Kr.itting, boy's pullover (size 8 needles, 4-ply wool); needlework, prettiest handkerchief. The cooking competition will take the form of a menu (most nutritious) for one
