Plunket Society

FIRST MEETING OF YEAR The Palmerston North branch of the Plunket Society met yesterday afternoon, Mrs. G. C. Petersen presiding. Others present were Afesdames T. Fairbrother, L. H. Collinson, L. A. Ferguson, W. G. Black, R. Burnett, T. J. Rogers and M. Aitchison (secretary). As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Sir Truby King, the founder of the Plunket movement, members stood in silence. The secretary reported that a wreath had been sent to the relatives of the late Sir Truby King, members subscribing for it.

The resignations of Mrs. K. Garland and Mrs. R. Tidswell were received with regret. The Plunket nurse, Miss A. M. Kearns, submitted the following report for the month of December:—Visits to homes 130, to office (adults) 702, babies 627, older children 79, total 1408 visits. There were 3.6 new eases. Forty-one registration letters and cards were posted and four letters were received and answered. Parcels of books and toys. for children were received from June Day and Bob Adcock and a parcel of clothing from Mrs. Dick. Visits to Foxton outstation totalled 176 (91 adults, 66 babies, and 19 older children). There were three new cases. Sales for the month totalled £l4 Os 3d and the following subscriptions were paid: Mesdames D. Riddiford ss, A. Tarrant ss, B. W. Doak ss. Mesdames H. Kissling (10s), Warren (10s) and Wynne-Jones (£1 -Is) sent in donations. The collection box realised £1 Is Id, making a total of £l7 17s 4d. The report submitted for January was as follows:—Number of visits to homes 133; visits to office, adults 663, babies 606, older children 56, making a total of 1325 visits. There were 44 new cases. Four letters were received and answered, while 20 registration letters and cards were posted. Visits to the Foxton office totalled 139 (adults 68, babies 63, older children 8), and there were two new cases. Sales for the month totalled £8 11s and the following subscriptions were received: Mesdames N. H. Hume ss, W. A. Sutherland ss, Cummins ss, Sherwood ss, E. S. Clarke 7s 6d, C. J. Florence ss, L. O. Tewes ss, Tillick 5s and A. Buchanan ss. Donations were received from Mesdames Bertram 5s and Boldt £1 Is, Kemp 10s, D. G. Glendinning £1 Is, and the collection box realised £1 15s, making a total of £ls 9s 6d. Letters of thanks for donations and Christmas wishes were received from the district nurse and the Plunket nurse. Letters wore also received from Miss E. A. Kelly, secretary of the Registered Nurses' Association, Wellington, asking the society if it would co-operate with them in raising funds for a memorial to the late Miss Patrick, who for many years was nursing advisor to the Plunket Society.

A suggestion was made to hold a bridge party in March, the purpose of which would be to raise funds towards the memorial. The suggestion was forwarded to the Registered Nurses' Association in Palmerston North, which has been asked to assist towards the memorial.

In view, of the numbers of resignations from the committee, nominations were taken for additional members. The date for Plunket Day and the annual stret stall was decided upon, this being March 22. It was decided to enlist helpers to sell badges and to assist at the stall, and also to canvas for goods for the stall. The secretary was instructed to write to the organising committee of the young girls' educational week in May, under the auspices of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union, offering them a talk and demonstration on mothercraft, the function to take place, subject to their approval, in the morning.
