There was a large gathering, including many visitors from other districts, on Tuesday night when the Women's Institute tendered Miss Ida Matthews a gift evening on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Opportunity was also taken to farewell Mrs A. C. Vile, who is leaving the district shortly and who has been a staunch member of the Institute. The evening was passed with cards and dancing, and following supper Mrs Ben. Frecklington (president of tho Institute) expressed regret at losing Miss Matthews and Mrs Vile, and on behalf of the members presented, both ladies with bronze fruit bowls as a mark of appreciation of their services and wished them happiness in their future spheres. The ladles’ hockey team also took the opportunity of farewelling Miss Matthews, and Mis® Mary Taylor presented her with a framed picture. Miss Matthews was also the recipient of a large number of presents, which were displayed. Mr D. Cameron/ on behalf of Miss Matthews, thanked the Institute and Hockey Club, and also the many friends for the gifts that had been presented. The. winners of the cards were Mrs E. Ingram and Mr D. Capstick, while a spot waltz was won.by Miss E. Mullin and Mr P. Ellery. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Miss E. Mullin. The Ohakea Sunday school annual picnic was held at Tangimoana neach last Saturday. There was a large crowd present, but before the sports programme could be commenced heavy rain fell and the function had to be abandoned. Messrs Des. Ellery, N. Ingram and L. Simpson have returned from a motor tour in the Tauranga and Rotorua districts. Miss lona Ellery has left for the Nelson district. Mrs Riley and Mrs Binns, of Freemantle, West Australia, are spending a holiday with their aunt, Mrs J. Harris. Mrs L. Koberstein has her. mother, from Hawera, as her guest. Mr and Mrs R. Anderson and their daughters Frances and Maysie. have returned from a motor tour of the Auckland and Rotorua districts. Mr and Mrs J. Wightman have returned from a holiday spent in the Auckland district. Miss Tui Masters has returned from a holiday spent in New Plymouth.
