Convent Schools’ Picnic
BUCCESSSFUL DESPITE THE WEATHER The Convent School committee were not fortunate in experiencing adverse weather conditions tor their annual picnic, which was held at the Awapuni Tacecourse yesterday. The morning broke fine, but at £.30 a.m. light rain commenced and continued to fall until noon. Although the conditions under* foot at the racecourse were ideal, the breeze from the cast was a decided contrast to the recent summer weather experienced. The picnic was a great success, due principally to the ideal appointments at the beautiful grounds of the Manawatu Racing Club's property, which are suitable in all respects for such a gathering. Although the weather conditions were not good, over 300 children and parents attended the picnic, many travelling by road. For the children tree drinks and icecreams were distributed by Mesdames bummers, Power, _ Christenson, Jervis, Lyons, Joues and O'Connor, and these ladies were given no peace until all the good things which go with a school picnic were distributed. Mr. F. W. Aisher a well-known local official in amateur athletics, was the handicapper an«l starter, and great credit is due to him for the manner in which the various events were run off. Mr. Aisher was capably assisted by Mr. T. E. Davidson and Mr. Eaton. The judges for the senior programme were Messrs. J. Kciliher, senr., C. O’Connell and R. P. Kelly. There were races for the tiny-tots throughout tne afternoon, and Messrs. G. Rodgers, J. Kelliher, jnnr. and D. P. C. Dinnan provided for their wants. Mr. Merritt was the announcer and Mr. C. Greening, the track steward. Prior to the opening of the sports programme Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., addressed the children and in a happy speech wished them a pleasant day. Mr. Hodgcns was warmly applauded and cheered at the conclusion of his remarks.
Very Rev. Monsignor J. F. Macx T anus attended the picnic curing the afternoon, and after the conclusion of the programme he presented the cups to the winners of the 100 yards handicap for boys and a 75 yards handicap for girls. He congratulated the winners and hoped that the children had enjoyed themselves in the beautiful surroundings. Rev. Fathers P. J. Herlihy and L.
